AI & AutomationOpenDesign: AI Design Prototypes Without the Agency Invoice
More than a hundred thousand GitHub stars, and most marketers have never heard of it. OpenDesign is a self-hosted design workspace where a coding agent does the actual drawing: you submit a brief, pick a brand package, and it writes working HTML prototypes, dashboards, slide decks, images or motion graphics into a project you preview and keep editing.
What OpenDesign actually is
- It ships no model of its own — by design. It drives the agent CLIs already on your machine (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Copilot and others), or calls provider endpoints directly through a local BYOK proxy. The tool is the workspace; the model is your choice.
- Projects are plain folders. HTML and CSS, with state in an embedded SQLite database. You own the output in the most literal sense — hand the files to any developer, or keep editing them by hand.
- One container to self-host. A single Alpine container from GHCR behind docker compose, authenticated with one shared API token. Desktop builds exist for macOS and Windows; Linux runs from source.
- Brand packages, not blank pages. Pick a brand package and the output arrives on-system: consistent colours, type and components across a prototype, a dashboard and a deck.
- The MCP server is read-only by default, with SSRF guarding at the proxy edge — the exposed integration cannot be turned into an attack surface by accident.
Why a business should care
- Drafts before invoices. The first round of a landing page, an internal dashboard or an investor deck is where agencies spend their most billable hours. Getting that round in minutes changes the economics of the conversation.
- No design-tool lock-in. The output is HTML and CSS, not a proprietary canvas file. Whatever happens to the tool — or the vendor — the work remains openable and editable.
- It uses the agent stack you already pay for. No second model subscription: the workspace drives the coding CLIs on your machine, or your own API keys.
- The app itself is free. Apache-2.0. Paid plans cover hosted model credits, team seats and SSO — none of which a small team self-hosting needs to start.
The output is HTML and CSS in a folder you own — not a canvas file that holds your work hostage.
Where it fits
The honest note: OpenDesign is beta — v0.x releases, and some collaboration features are still partly shipped. It is for the curious, not the cautious. But for a business that wants AI-assisted design output without surrendering the files, it is the direction the whole category is moving, and it is worth an afternoon.
Getting started
One Alpine container behind docker compose, a shared API token, and an agent CLI (or a BYOK key) on the machine doing the drawing. Open the workspace, write the brief, pick the brand package. Native desktop builds skip the container on macOS and Windows.
How Uphill Tech helps
We deploy and manage self-hosted tools like OpenDesign on your own servers, and turn the output into shipped work — prototypes, dashboards and full sites built from the files the workspace produces. The first conversation is free.
