AI & AutomationAnythingLLM: Chat With Your Own Documents, on Your Own Server
“Can we just chat with our own documents?” is the question small businesses ask us most. There is a pile of PDFs — contracts, invoices, manuals, policies — and no practical way to find out what is in them without reading every one.
AnythingLLM is the cleanest answer that does not send those files to a third party. It is an all-in-one, self-hosted AI application: document chat, AI agents and multi-user workspaces, MIT-licensed, running on your hardware.
What AnythingLLM actually is
- Chat with your files. PDFs, documents and spreadsheets are embedded and made searchable — retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) is built in, not an add-on. Ask a question, get an answer with the source document cited.
- Any model you want. Local models through Ollama or LM Studio, or cloud models from OpenAI, Anthropic and others — swap providers without changing how your team uses the tool.
- Multi-user workspaces. The Docker version adds workspaces with per-user permissions, plus an embeddable chat widget for a client-facing or internal portal.
- Agents and scheduled tasks. A no-code agent builder, custom skills, model routing and scheduled jobs, so the assistant can do more than answer questions.
- Your choice underneath. Pick the vector database — LanceDB, PGVector, Chroma, Qdrant and others — and the embedding model. No opaque pipeline you cannot inspect.
Why a business should care
- Client documents stay client documents. The files you feed it never leave your server. For firms handling contracts, financials or health-adjacent records, that removes the compliance conversation before it starts.
- No token meter. Local models have no per-query cost, so encouraging people to actually use the assistant does not show up as a surprise bill.
- It answers from your material. Generic chatbots guess from the public internet; AnythingLLM answers from your contracts, your manuals, your policies — and points to the page it used.
- It deploys simply. One Docker Compose stack, or a desktop app for a single user. MIT-licensed, with no feature tiers.

Where it fits
The honest note: retrieval quality depends on the documents you feed it, and a local 8B-class model will be less fluent than a frontier model. Pair it with a stronger hosted model when the volume of sensitive material allows, and the local setup handles the day-to-day questions. The win is that the choice is yours, per workspace.
Getting started
Docker Compose for the multi-user server, or the desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux. Add an embedding model and a chat model, point a workspace at a folder of documents, and the first questions usually land within the hour.
