Tools & TipsUptime Kuma: Free Monitoring That Texts You Before Customers Notice
You find out your site is down from a customer. That is the most expensive monitoring plan there is. Uptime Kuma is the free fix: a self-hosted monitor with a live dashboard, 90+ alert channels, and a one-container install.
What it watches
- HTTP(S) + keyword: not just "is it up" but "does the page still say Book Now". Catches broken deploys that return 200 with an empty page.
- SSL expiry, DNS, ping, ports: cert expiring in 14 days, DNS hijack, mail port closed — each gets its own check.
- Intervals down to 20 seconds with retries, so a single slow response does not page you at 3am.
Install in 5 minutes
One volume, one port: docker run -d --restart=always -p 3001:3001 -v uptime-kuma:/app/data --name uptime-kuma louislam/uptime-kuma:1. Open port 3001, create admin user, add homepage as HTTP monitor with keyword check, add SSL monitoring, then connect Telegram or email alerts.
Downtime you hear about from a customer already cost you. Downtime your phone tells you about first is just a restart.
Tips that matter
- Monitor the booking/quote page, not just homepage — that is where money dies.
- Set maintenance windows for deploy hours so alerts stay meaningful.
- Pair with Cloudflare: Kuma watches origin + edge, so you know which side failed.
