RustDesk: Self-Hosted Remote Desktop Without the TeamViewer Bill

October 29, 2026 · 4 min read · Uphill Tech Team

RustDesk — self-hosted and open source

Remote access is one of those purchases nobody evaluates until the renewal notice arrives. TeamViewer raises its prices. AnyDesk reworks its licensing. Every few years, whichever tool your support desk depends on reminds you that you are a customer, not an owner.

RustDesk is the alternative that flips the arrangement. It is an open-source remote desktop application, AGPL-3.0 licensed, with more than 125,000 GitHub stars — and you run the server it talks to.

What RustDesk actually is

A remote desktop client written in Rust with a Flutter UI, covering unattended access, file transfer, clipboard sync, TCP tunneling and multi-monitor setups. The part that matters for ownership: the signalling server (hbbs) and the relay server (hbbr) are two small services you host yourself, via Docker or native packages.

Why a business should care

Remote access priced per seat taxes you for growing. Self-hosted makes it a fixed cost.

Where it fits

For a small business doing its own IT support, RustDesk replaces the recurring line item and the data-residency concern at once. TeamViewer remains slicker for occasional ad-hoc sessions with outside clients; RustDesk wins for the internal case — your machines, your technicians, your infrastructure — which is where most of the remote access hours actually go.

Getting started

Two containers (hbbs and hbbr), a client installed on the machines you want to reach, and a port opened on your firewall. Point the clients at your server and the default relay setup handles the rest. The project ships official Docker images, packages for Debian, Flatpak and F-Droid builds, and documentation that assumes a sysadmin, not a specialist.

How Uphill Tech helps

We deploy and manage self-hosted tools like RustDesk on your own servers — the two server services, TLS, user authentication and backups handled, so your team gets remote support it owns without becoming its own sysadmin. The first conversation is free.
