ParentingPreschool Language (3-5 Years): Building Sentences, Feelings and School Readiness
By 3, most children ask why constantly. By 5, they tell stories. The jump is not just word count — it is using language to express feelings (happy, shy, proud), observe weather and numbers (rainy, seven), and navigate social life (please, share, wait).
What preschool language sounds like
- Feelings: naming happy / sad / angry / excited instead of just crying or pointing.
- Abstract words: colours, shapes, numbers used correctly — "a blue triangle".
- Social language: hello, thank you, sorry, please — the words that make a classroom work.
School words are social words
Tracks like School (teacher, backpack, scissors), Feelings (happy through proud), Manners and Pretend Play (doctor, firefighter, pilot) teach the vocabulary children hear on day one of kindergarten — before day one.

How to help at this age
- Ask open questions: "What did the happy bear do today?"
- Name feelings as they happen — "You seem proud you finished the puzzle."
- Let them retell the short story in their own words after hearing it.
