ParentingToddler Vocabulary Explosion (18-36 Months): From Single Words to Sentences
Between 18 and 36 months, most toddlers jump from 50 words to 300-500. They also start combining them: more milk, daddy go, big dog woof. The engine behind it is the same — frequent naming of things they can see and touch.
The naming burst
At this stage every new object is a question: what is that? The adult who answers quickly and warmly — with the right article ("a ball", "an apple") — gives the child the scaffolding to build sentences.
Stories lock words in
Short stories that reuse the same 8-10 words with a gentle narrative help far more than isolated drills. A story about a bear, a boat, and a blue ball revisits colours, animals, and vehicles in context — so the words return naturally rather than as a test.

How to help at this age
- Expand what they say: if they say "cat", answer "Yes, a soft grey cat."
- Read one short story aloud before bed and ask them to point at what they remember.
- Let them lead the taps — following their curiosity keeps motivation high.
