Delphi MigrationHow We Migrate Delphi Legacy Systems: Our High-Level Process
Migrating a Delphi application isn't a rewrite — it's a transplant. The business logic your team has refined over years must survive the move from desktop to web. Here's the high-level process we follow, phase by phase, so nothing important gets lost along the way.
Phase 1 — Requirements Analysis
Everything starts with understanding what the application actually does — not what the documentation says it does.
- Stakeholder workshops: we interview the people who use the system daily: operators, managers, and support staff.
- Application inventory: we list every screen, form, report, and export the current system performs.
- Business rules capture: validation rules, calculations, workflows, and edge cases are documented in plain language.
- Priority ranking: you tell us which modules matter most — we sequence the work around your business, not our convenience.
The requirements document is the contract of the migration. If it's not in the document, it doesn't get built — so we invest heavily here.
Phase 2 — Application Assessment & Architecture
- Codebase review: we analyze the Delphi source, database schema, and integration points (file shares, printers, legacy APIs).
- Data model mapping: tables, relationships, and data quality issues are catalogued before any rebuild starts.
- Target architecture: we design the new platform — React on the front end, Node.js APIs in the middle, your database (or a modern one) at the back, styled with Tailwind.
- Migration strategy: module-by-module (recommended) or big-bang cutover — we agree on the approach and the timeline.
Phase 3 — Rebuild
- UI first: screens are rebuilt in React with Tailwind, matching — or improving on — the original workflows.
- Backend logic: business rules are ported to Node.js services, one module at a time.
- Parallel operation: the old desktop system keeps running while new modules go live, so your team never stops working.
Phase 4 — Data Migration
- Extract, transform, verify: data is moved, cleaned where needed, and reconciled against the source.
- Dual-entry period: both systems run in parallel while we compare outputs — totals, reports, and records must match.
- Cutover: once reconciled, we switch operations to the new platform on a scheduled date.
Phase 5 — Testing: UI and Functionalities
Testing is where a migration is won or lost. We test at three levels:
- Functional testing: every screen and workflow is executed against the original — does it do the same thing, with the same results?
- UI/UX testing: layout, navigation, responsiveness on desktop/tablet/mobile, accessibility, and consistency with your brand.
- Regression & data testing: calculated fields, totals, and reports are compared side-by-side against the Delphi output until they match exactly.
- User acceptance testing (UAT): your own team runs their real daily tasks in the new system and signs off before we cut over.
We don't ship a migration because the code compiles — we ship it because your team ran their real work in the new system and it matched.
Phase 6 — Go-Live & Support
- Cutover: performed at a low-activity window with a rollback plan ready.
- Training: quick-start guides and walkthroughs for your team.
- Ongoing management: hosting, backups, monitoring, and updates — fully managed by Uphill Tech.
