Enterprise InfrastructureCheap VPS Hosting: Capable Providers on a Budget
A VPS — a virtual private server — is the middle ground between cheap shared hosting and an expensive dedicated machine. Prices have fallen hard: capable entry-level VPS plans now start around $4 to $6 USD per month. The catch is what you do with them once the invoice is paid.
Where the cheap plans are
- DigitalOcean: simple pricing, huge documentation, droplets from a few dollars a month. The default choice for developers.
- Vultr and Linode (now Akamai): comparable specs and pricing, strong global presence including locations closer to Canadian users.
- Hetzner: famously good value from Germany, with data centres in North America. High specs for the price.
- OVHcloud and Contabo: aggressive pricing for more RAM and storage, popular with budget-conscious operators.
What the price doesn't include
An unmanaged VPS is a bare server: you install the operating system, the web server, the database, the firewall, the backups, and the monitoring. One misconfigured firewall or one missed update and the server is down or compromised. The real cost of a cheap server is the hours it takes to keep it alive — that's where 'cheap' becomes expensive.
- Managed vs unmanaged: managed plans cost 2-4x more but someone else runs them. For most small businesses, managed is the honest choice.
- Backups and snapshots: usually extra. A server without backups isn't a server, it's a promise.
- Bandwidth and IPs: fine print on transfer limits and extra IP costs.
- Support: on budget tiers, support is ticket-only and slow. Budget hosts are a bargain until something breaks at 2 AM.
A cheap VPS is a good deal only if someone is actually managing it. Otherwise you're paying in hours instead of dollars.
When a small business should — or shouldn't — get a VPS
If you're running a growing web app, a custom portal, or an e-commerce store that has outgrown shared hosting, a VPS makes sense. If you just need a brochure site or a blog, a managed WordPress plan is cheaper and safer. The choice isn't about prestige — it's about what the workload needs.
